What Are Voluntary Carbon Offsets?Global Warming has been attributed to the volume of Carbon Dioxide that has been released into the atmosphere by mans' industrial activities. This greenhouse gas increases the amount of the suns energy that is retained by our planet. The concept of carbon offsetting is that by developing a project which counter balances the emissions, we are in effect carbon neutral. A voluntary market exists to simplify the sponsoring of carbon reducing projects and allows individuals and companies the opportunity to contribute to their success. Buy offsets |
The Compliance Market
Under The Kyoto Agreement, 55 nations are committed to reduce Global Carbon Dioxide levels. Each nation has agreed to reduction targets and therefore has to put policies and incentives in place to achieve those commitments. If a member nation or company is a high emitter it will need to purchase "credits" from a low emitter in order to avoid exceeding its maximum allowance or "Cap". This Cap and Trade system exists to produce a market in Carbon Credits. If an organisation produces less Carbon than its allowance, it can sell the surplus on the open market. This price fluctuates depending on many economic factors, much like any other commodity.
Carbon Neutral
The offset is achieved either by taking out CO2 from the atmosphere at the same rate as the emissions, or by replacing a process such as electricity generation with a clean method of achieving the same result. For example a solar electric power plant may generate 1 Mw of electricity and have zero carbon impact. By sponsoring such a project, an individual or company can offset the carbon they indirectly produce when they draw power from the national grid or a coal fired power station. Similarly if trees are planted they will absorb Carbon Dioxide as the grow. In order to be a valid offset they would have to be planted as a direct result of the investment. In other words they have to be in addition to any existing planting in order to be adding to the amount of CO2 absorbed. Contact Carbon Projects
