Carbon Offset Your Copier
Do you have a photocopier in your office?
Copiers and Multi Functional Devices which scan and print across the office network use the most power when they are running and operating a finishing device such as a stapler or hole punch.
The typical office photocopier can use up to 3.5 KW of electrical power when busy and between 1 and 65 Watts in standby.
To calculate the CO2 emissions for this type of machine we could assume a usage of 5 hours per day with 19 hours in standby.
So Daily Power Consumption = (3500 Watts x 5 hours ) + (65 Watts x 19 hours)
= 17500 + 1235
= 18735 Watts per day
= An Average of 780.625 Watts per hour
= 0.78KWH
A coal fired power-station creates close to 1 KG of CO2 for every KWH of energy produced, so in order to offset one day of photocopier energy it would take 0.78 units x 24 hours or 18.7 Kg in carbon offsets.
To calculate the annual carbon footprint of the device we could multiply the daily figure by 250, assuming the machine is switched off over holidays and weekends.
This gives us a figure of 4675Kg or 4.675 tonnes of CO2 per year.
The figures are naturally subject to variables such as make and model of machine, usage, and power source. You may want to contact your power supplier to see if the energy you receive is created by coal, nuclear or renewable, as this will affect the CO2 figure per KWH but an offset of 5 Tonnes per year should be a good estimate. At £20 per tonne this would cost £100 on an annual basis.
Green Plan
The Green Plan from Carbon Projects Ltd. combines your copier meter click charge with a carbon offset. Pricing varies depending on the volume of printing that you are doing. As an example, a machine that averages 100,000 prints per year would cost an extra 0.1p per click . We purchase certified Carbon Credits to offset the machines carbon footprint and provide a sticker and certificate which can be placed next to the device to demonstrate your commitment to the environment. You will also be entitled to use the logo in all corporate communications.
Your Environment Policy
If your company cares about the environment, it is likely that your customers will be interested to know more about your policies and systems.
